Net salary in Lisbon with housing paid: the real maths

Jeunes Européens souriants calculant leur salaire net à Lisbonne en terrasse

On roughly 1,060 € gross a month paid 14 times a year, the net salary in Lisbon for a customer advisor comes to an estimated 850 to 900 € once the 11% social security contribution (about 117 €) and a variable IRS withholding are deducted. Because the employer covers housing at 100%, you actually have 900 to 1,000 € a month to spend or save, bonuses included. Here is the calculation line by line, so you know exactly where every euro goes.

From gross to net: the calculation line by line

In Portugal, two deductions appear on your payslip. The first is the employee contribution to Segurança Social, set at 11% of gross pay, which is about 117 € on 1,060 €. The second is the withholding for IRS (the Portuguese income tax), whose rate depends on your situation: single or in a couple, with or without children, tax resident or not. The official tables are published every year by the Portal das Finanças.

For a single employee without children, the IRS withholding on 1,060 € gross stays modest, in the region of a few dozen euros. We use a cautious range of 40 to 90 €: this is an estimate, and the exact figure appears on your first payslip.

Line Monthly amount
Gross salary 1,060 €
Social security (11%) about 117 €
IRS withholding (estimate) 40 to 90 €
Estimated net 850 to 900 €
Typical bonuses (estimate) 50 to 100 €
Housing (rent, utilities, internet) 0 €, paid by the employer
Real disposable income (estimate) 900 to 1,000 €

The housing line deserves a word of explanation. For someone recruited through Expat-U, the rent, utilities and internet of the shared flat are paid by the employer for the whole duration of the contract. That line therefore sits at 0 €, and it is what turns a net of 850 to 900 € into a real disposable income of 900 to 1,000 €.

Why 14 payments rather than 12

Portuguese labour law adds two mandatory payments to the 12 monthly salaries: the subsídio de férias (holiday allowance, usually paid before the summer break) and the subsídio de Natal (Christmas allowance, paid by 15 December at the latest). Each equals one full month of salary. Your gross annual pay is therefore 14 times 1,060 €, which is 14,840 €.

Some employers spread these two allowances over the year, a system the Portuguese call duodécimos. In that case your displayed monthly gross rises to about 1,237 € (1,060 € × 14 / 12) and the net follows the same logic, around 990 to 1,040 € by our estimate. The annual total is identical, only the rhythm changes. To understand the payslip as a whole, read our guide to salary in Portugal and how it is built.

What employer-paid housing really changes

In every large European city, housing is the biggest line in a young worker’s budget, often a third or half of the net salary. Lisbon is no exception. When the employer takes that line over, comparing with a local salary becomes misleading: a Portuguese colleague on the same gross has to subtract rent, utilities, internet and a deposit before knowing what is left. You do not.

In practice, your net lands in your account and you only have day-to-day living costs to cover: transport, groceries, going out, phone. That mechanism is why an entry-level salary in Portugal allows you to save, where the same amount without housing would mean counting every euro. The positions that come with this arrangement are listed on our page of jobs in Portugal with housing included.

Sample monthly budget with housing paid

Here is a realistic budget for a customer advisor starting out in Lisbon, with housing and internet already covered. The amounts are averages observed among our candidates in post; they obviously vary with your lifestyle.

Item Monthly amount (estimate)
Navegante pass (metro, bus, tram, train, ferry) 40 €
Groceries 150 to 200 €
Restaurants and going out 100 to 150 €
Phone and subscriptions 15 to 25 €
Leisure, sport, weekend trips 50 to 100 €
Total spending 355 to 515 €
Possible savings or buffer about 400 to 600 €

The metropolitan Navegante pass at 40 € a month covers metro, buses, trams, suburban trains and ferries across the whole Lisbon region. On the food side, a coffee costs 0.80 to 1 € and a prato do dia (a full dish of the day) 8 to 12 €, which leaves room to eat out several times a week without unbalancing the budget.

Comparison with the Portuguese minimum wage 2026

The Portuguese national minimum wage is set at 920 € gross a month in 2026, also paid 14 times. A gross of 1,060 € therefore sits about 15% above the legal minimum, which is the usual entry level for foreign-language customer service roles. The table below compares the two situations, taking housing into account.

Line Minimum wage 2026 Offer with housing paid
Monthly gross 920 € 1,060 €
Social security 11% about 101 € about 117 €
IRS (estimate) often close to 0 € 40 to 90 €
Estimated net about 820 € 850 to 900 €
Housing to pay yourself yes no, 0 €
Real disposable income (estimate) net minus housing 900 to 1,000 €

On the minimum wage, the IRS withholding is often close to zero thanks to the minimum subsistence rule (mínimo de existência); at 1,060 € it remains low. The real difference does not come from the gross but from the housing line. For more on the tax itself, read our article on taxes in Portugal for a foreign employee.

Your salary over the first two years

The base salary of 1,060 € gross applies to the first year of the contract, paid training included. On top come variable bonuses depending on the role: a performance bonus linked to service quality, a language bonus on some projects, and the legal 25% uplift for hours worked at night (between 10 pm and 7 am) under the Código do Trabalho. An advisor on night rotation can therefore see a noticeable rise in net pay.

At the end of the first 12 months the fixed-term contract is renewable and housing remains provided during the renewal. Salary progression then depends on the employer and the project: moving to a level 2 role, team coaching or quality support are the most common paths. Leave entitlement, 22 working days a year plus 13 public holidays, applies from the first year; our page on paid leave in Portugal explains how it is counted.

The Expat-U offer: what the contract includes

We recruit French, German and Dutch speakers for customer advisor and content moderator roles with large international companies based in Lisbon and Porto. The contract is a 12-month fixed-term contract, renewable, with paid initial training. Shared housing (rent, utilities, internet) is provided for the whole duration of the contract, the outbound flight is reimbursed for French speakers and booked directly by the company for German and Dutch speakers, and the employer handles the paperwork (NIF, NISS), health insurance and airport pick-up. The profile sought: EU citizen, native French, German or Dutch, working English for internal communication, secondary school diploma as a minimum. Open positions and training dates are gathered on our hub of jobs in Portugal for French, German and Dutch speakers. To compare with other European countries, the EURES portal publishes working and pay conditions for every member state.

FAQ

How much is really left on 1,060 € gross with housing paid?

By our estimate, between 900 and 1,000 € a month, bonuses included. The net after social security (11%) and IRS comes to around 850 to 900 €, and housing costs you nothing, utilities and internet included.

Is the IRS rate the same for everyone?

No. The withholding depends on your family situation, number of children and tax residence. On 1,060 € gross we estimate 40 to 90 € for a single person; the official tables are available on the Portal das Finanças.

Are the holiday and Christmas allowances taxed?

Yes, they follow the same rules as the monthly salary: an 11% social security contribution and IRS withholding. Each equals one month of pay, hence 14 payments a year and 14,840 € gross annually.

Do I pay anything for housing, such as a deposit or utilities?

No. Rent, utilities and internet for the shared flat are paid by the employer for the whole duration of the contract, including a renewal. You pay no deposit and no agency fee.

Can you save money on this salary in Lisbon?

Yes. With day-to-day spending of 355 to 515 € (transport, groceries, going out, phone, leisure), our estimate leaves 400 to 600 € a month in savings or buffer, a level that is hard to reach when you pay for your own housing.
